John Willard
Carnival in Rio
1988
1988
John Willard's quilts are not intended to keep us warm, but to be enjoyed as works of art. Here we see a contemporary take on the optical illusions often used by quilt makers of an earlier era. Willard's quilts are readily identifiable by his exuberant use of colour. As well, Carnival in Rio employs the signature black and white graphic elements that are prevalent in the artist's work of this period. This piece was quilted by Alvina Martin.
