Fibreworks

Next in Fibre exhibition in the Queen's Square Gallery.

Since its inception in 1982, Fibreworks has celebrated the textile industry of the Grand River region through a biennial exhibition of fibre-based artworks. This influential exhibition has been pivotal in shaping Cambridge Art Galleries’ permanent collection of contemporary Canadian fibre art, evolving from showcasing Ontario-based artists to embracing talents nationwide.

Fibreworks, in every inception, is an exhibition where innovation meets tradition, and every piece tells a compelling story.” exhibition co-curators Karly Boileau and Alix Voz.

Next in Fibre: 20th Anniversary of Fibreworks

To mark the 20th Anniversary of Fibreworks, we are thrilled to present a fusion of our two biennial exhibitions, Fibreworks and SHOW (the Emerging Ontario-based Artist Showcase). Titled Next In Fibre: 20th Anniversary of Fibreworks, this exhibition at the Queen’s Square Gallery, presents ten artists reinterpreting the role and significance of fibre art. Collectively, these works ask questions about who we are within the broader world and how we negotiate today’s social and political polarities. The artists engage with themes related to the body, identity, relationships, ancestry, and the self, offering thoughtful reflections on contemporary life.

Fibreworks 20th Anniversary Collection Show

If Next in Fibre showcases the future of fibre art, then Fibreworks 20th Anniversary Collection Show at the Preston Gallery reflects on its past. Each piece on display marks a significant point on our timeline, featuring works acquired from various Fibreworks exhibitions. The exhibition begins with Kai Chan’s Playing Mountains, Playing Marriage, acquired in 1988 and extends to Daniel Machego-Badiola’s Guardian No.7, acquired in 2014. This rewind into the past offers insight into artistic trends and collection practices over the years. More importantly, revisiting the collection’s past invites us to take a critical look at our collection, ensuring a more inclusive and diverse representation of artists, mediums, and techniques in future acquisitions.

The community is invited to an exhibition celebration on Friday, October 4 to experience the work and learn about Fibreworks legacy during a panel talk with special guests; Mary Misner, Ivan Jurakic, and Amanda McCavour.
