Commemorate Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day at Cambridge Public Library with historical lectures, author talks, film screenings, and items from our collections.
Award-Winning Authors
Two bestselling, award-winning Canadian historians are visiting Cambridge to discuss their newest releases and the true stories behind them:
- Ted Barris, author of Battle of Britain: Canadian Airmen in Their Finest Hour, will share the gripping story of Canadian pilots defending Britain from Nazi attack in World War II on Thursday, October 24 at Preston.
- Tim Cook, author of The Good Allies, will be at Queen’s Square on Saturday, November 2 to discuss the turbulent wartime relationship between Canada and the US.
Women in Wartime
Learn more about the diverse contributions of women during wartime, whether working with military forces or helping on the homefront:
- On Tuesday, November 5, the Old Post Office hosts a special National Film Board screening of A Return to Memory (2024), a documentary about the women who stepped up during wartime to become Canadian film pioneers.
- Along with the other pieces of history it holds, the City of Cambridge Archives is home to the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) archives. Dan Schmalz, Information and Archives Analyst, will present the story of the WRENS, the crucial role they played in the Second World War, and their connection to Galt on Thursday, November 7 at Queen’s Square.
Time of Remembrance
Remember the courage and sacrifice of those who heeded the call to serve:
- From October 25 to November 11, visit our Preston location to view photos and facts about the soldiers honoured on the Preston cenotaph.
- On November 11, Royal Canadian Legion (Galt) Branch 121 presents its Remembrance Day ceremony at the Galt War Memorial in Queen’s Square. To complement the service, our Queen’s Square location will feature light refreshments and performances of wartime music in the lobby. A moment of silence will be observed as part of the program.
