At Clemens Mill, Active Living is more than just a unique collection: it’s a state of mind.
Clemens Mill team members, Kimberley and Kathleen, tap into the energy of this dynamic location for their work, from designing displays to hosting programming.
What current project of yours are you most excited about?
Kathleen: It’s ongoing, but I’m always excited to discover new ways to make our collections more attractive and easier to find. My goal is to make our members feel welcome and empowered to enjoy all the amazing things in our collections, as well as our bookable spaces: the MakerHUB, Meeting Rooms, and Gaming Station. Our 3D printing pickup service continues to grow and thrive – it’s always fun to see what projects our members are creating. Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing how we continue to interpret the now familiar in all our locations.
Kimberley: I am incredibly excited for the spring programming session! At Clemens Mill you will see an increase in our offerings for school-aged through to teen members. From Chess Club to Warhammer, Art Lab to Ultimate Makers we have a jam-packed lineup. We are also continuing to work with St. Benedict students to create programs and spaces that are engaging and welcoming. Diverse collections, inclusive displays, and safe spaces are our top priorities.
What are your hidden talents or hobbies?
Kathleen: After discovering a gluten intolerance years ago, I enjoy the challenge of converting conventional recipes into gluten-free options. I’m happiest transforming my home through seasonal décor, gardening and DIY projects, big and small.
Kimberley: Since I am a bit of a history nerd, my favourite hobby is antiquing! I also love historic architecture, and visiting local heritage buildings whenever I can. I took my hobby to the next level by becoming an appointed member of the Heritage Advisory Committee for the Township of North Dumfries in 2020.
What is your favourite book to re-read or movie to re-watch?
Kathleen: My favourites tend to run British: I’ve re-watched Downton Abbey and The Crown enough times to anticipate the dialogue! When it comes to re-reads, I reach for Alice Munro, L.M. Montgomery, Robin McKinley, Joanna Trollope, and Rosamunde Pilcher. I tend to read a mix of contemporary and historical fiction (especially World War II), and I love a good biography!
Kimberley: My favourite book to re-read is the juvenile adaptation of Little Women. I read it as a child, and enjoy reading it to my daughter each year around the holiday season. As Louisa May Alcott said, “Some books are so familiar that reading them is like being home again”.
